Promoting cultural heritage using current digital reconstruction technologies

RO-CHER – Component project 4

50PCCDI/2018 – PC4

Project goal

The element of scientific novelty is the integration of advanced terrestrial laser scanning technologies, space information technologies and satellite technologies for the development of comprehensive virtual environments. These innovative virtual environments will be created with the help of three-dimensional modeling software applications specialized in the urban environment, but also with components dedicated to (semi) natural areas. The faithful reconstruction of all elements of the natural and anthropic landscape will be carried out using geospatial information (numerical terrain models, optical satellite images and very high resolution radar, etc.) collected for each objective.

General objective

The general objective of this component project is represented by the development of an integrated technology for the realization of virtual digital reconstruction products, based on terrestrial laser scanning in the case of cultural heritage objectives and 3D scanning in the case of exhibits.

Specific objectives

  • development of geospatial data collections and related, object-oriented databases;
  • creating comprehensive virtual environments for modeling the objectives of the movable and immovable patrimony;
  • supporting the authorities involved in the management of cultural heritage by providing innovative digital reconstruction products;
  • promoting the Romanian cultural heritage through modern technologies and attractive products dedicated to the general public.
Phase I

Selection of pilot objectives from the cultural heritage and exhibits that will be digitally reconstructed. Preparation of the working methodology for digital reconstruction.

ICECHIM activities:

  • Contributions to the analysis and selection of cultural heritage objectives and exhibits that will be digitally reconstructed.
Phase II

Digital products for the promotion of cultural heritage.

ICECHIM activities:

  • Contributions to performing 3D scanning sessions of exhibits;
  • Contributions to the definition of digital 3D reconstruction products;
  • Contributions to the processing of recordings made by terrestrial laser scanning of cultural heritage objectives;
