Accelerated advances in Earth Observation technologies determine their successful use in various fields, but especially for natural resources management, ecosystem management and agriculture, providing important information input for monitoring agrosystems and assessing risks to human health. Precision agriculture (PA) is an entire system management approach using information technology, satellite radio navigation (GNSS) data, remote sensing and other associated data sources.

Project goal

The overall project objective is the development and implementation of an alert system for precision agriculture and environmental management related to identification of air pollution and extreme weather events.

General objectives

The overall project objective is the development and implementation of an alert system for precision agriculture and environmental management related to identification of air pollution and extreme weather events.

The specific objectives are focused on the evaluation of the evolution in time of the physical-chemical characteristics of the crops in correlation with air and of the climatic variables in the area of a pilot site, the estimation of the occurrence of extreme weather phenomena, but also of pollution events during annual vegetative vegetation cycles of the crops with the identification of the influences of long range transport air masses.

Phase I

Agrosystem and climatic trends analysis in the pilot site region.

Deployment period: 20/08/2020 – 31/12/2020

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Development of protocols for in-situ monitoring of the crop growth parameters and the agrometeorological conditions (soil, water, plant).
Phase II

Monitoring of the physico-chemical characteristics of the air, agrosystems and the climatic variables essential in the area of the pilot site.

Deployment period: 01/01/2021 – 31/12/2021

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Agrosystem monitoring in the target areas by: Identification and quantification of the main types of organic pollutants and inorganics present in water, soil and plants depending on the climatic conditions;
  • Dissemination and communication.
Phase III

Analysis of the impact of climate conditions and air pollution on the pilot site and implementation of a useful alarm system for precision agriculture.

Deployment period: 01/01/2022 – 19/08/2022

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Identification of the correlations between atmospheric pollutants from proximity or distance sources and crops health in the pilot site using Earth Observation technologies and classical methods of investigation;
  • Elaboration and implementation of alarm procedures for the occurrence of extreme meteorological phenomena and air pollution events;
  • Dissemination and communication.
Dissemination and communication

The project was presented in an exhibition of inventions, obtaining the following results:

  • International Exhibition of Research, Innovations and Inventions – ProInvent 2020, Cluj-Napoca (Excellence diploma);
  • Ist international exhibition InventCor, Deva (gold medal),
  • EUROINVENT European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation Iași, 2021 (Diploma of Excellence)

as well as awards from other participating entities.
