AI & Earth Observation based services for cultural heritage monitoring

AIRFARE

PN-III-P2-2.1-PTE-2019-0579 (61PTE/2020)

The conservation of natural and historical monuments has a strategic importance for maintaining the local and national cultural identity, encouraging the sustainable exploitation of cultural properties and creating new social opportunities.

Project goal

The main objective of the AIRFARE project is to develop a prototype of services to the target market, which analyzes sites with high natural or cultural relevance and offers solutions to mitigate and prevent future degradation or deterioration by assessing past and current site conditions and forecasting future trends, focusing mainly on urbanization, vegetation changes and geological factors, in the context of climate change and anthropogenic intervention.

General objectives

The main objective of the AIRFARE project is to develop a prototype of target services, which analyzes sites with high natural or cultural relevance and offers solutions to mitigate and prevent future degradation or deterioration by assessing past and current site conditions and forecasting future trends, with emphasis mainly on urbanization, vegetation changes and geological factors in the context of climate change and anthropogenic intervention.

The specific objectives of the project are: Development of change detection services for monitoring and risk prevention systems through early warning, using mergers between multispectral and radar EO data and Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning algorithms; Development of movement monitoring services based on radar EO data and multi-temporal interferometry techniques; Improving travel monitoring services by integrating AI / ML techniques for early warning in case of atypical movement trends; Identifying the requirements associated with the development of services for the cultural heritage built by involving relevant stakeholders (central and local authorities, heritage site administrators, etc.); Defining, implementing and validating services in representative use cases and scenarios.

Phase I

Defining user requirements, identifying, analyzing and choosing the optimal algorithms.

Deployment period: 07/09/2020 – 31/12/2020
