The development of eco-friendly solutions based on silanes and nanoparticles for buildings and heritage consolidation

PN-IV-P7-7.1-PTE-2024-0522 (47PTE/2025)

The structures of buildings and monuments (those belonging to cultural heritage being a particular case of interest) are susceptible to deterioration caused by natural forces (such as weather, earthquakes and erosion), but also those resulting from anthropogenic actions. Climate change amplifies these risks, underlining the urgency of implementing strengthening measures to mitigate the impact on the environment.

Project goal

The goal of the project “Development of ecological solutions based on silanes and nanoparticles for the consolidation of buildings and monuments” (NanoConsol) is the transfer and development of a consolidation technology (based on innovative nanomaterials with self-repairing properties and antimicrobial effect), dedicated to different types of materials in the composition of buildings and monuments (especially immovable heritage objects), to an economic agent with experience in creating and applying solutions for the consolidation of such objects, in order to increase its economic competitiveness, as well as its implementation in target sites, in an integrated monitoring/consolidation technology, with the ultimate goal of achieving a viable technology for the consolidation of heritage buildings.

General objective

The project is intended to support compliance with Article 3(3) of the Treaty on European Union (which provides that the Union “shall ensure that Europe’s cultural heritage is protected and enhanced”), and through Article 167(2) undertakes common actions leading to “the conservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage of European importance”). At the same time, although the legislative framework exists (either through the adoption of international regulations by national legislation or through the development of its own specific legislative measures), cases of buildings belonging to the immovable cultural heritage that are at risk or that have, in the meantime, disappeared can often be encountered.

Specific objectives
  • (a) Documenting the transfer of validated laboratory technology to industrial scale and identifying opportunities for optimizing the proposed technology (functionally and operationally) by aligning it with the latest scientific discoveries in the field, to ensure the success of the transfer;
  • (b) Transferring and optimizing the proposed technology in the industrial environment;
  • (c) Validating the efficiency of the technology by independent entities;
  • (d) Demonstrating the efficiency of the technology implemented in the industrial environment.
Phase I

Preliminary activities for technology validation at industrial level.

Implementation period: 05.05.2025-31.12.2025

Activities for the partner ICECHIM:

  • Study on the transfer of validated laboratory technology to industrial scale;
  • Study and analysis of the possibilities of optimizing the synthesis/processing process of inorganic materials to obtain nanomaterials with self-repairing properties and antimicrobial effect on an industrial scale;
  • Synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials for technology;
  • Obtaining solutions with a consolidating role optimized for integration into technology;
  • Contributions to the design of the functional model for the implementation of the technology at the industrial level;
  • Study and comparative analysis of the effects of technology implementation by evaluating the consolidating effects on support material models;
  • Results and project dissemination.
Phase II

Validation of the proposed technology in the industrial environment.

Implementation period: 01.01.2026-31.12.2026

Activities for the partner ICECHIM:

  • Experimental study on the functional model regarding the optimization of technological parameters;
  • Contributions to the validation of the technology by third parties;
  • Contributions to the activity of protecting industrial property rights (development of a patent application);
  • Results and project dissemination.
Phase III

Demonstrating the efficiency of technology in the industrial environment.

Implementation period: 01.01.2027-04.05.2027

Activities for the partner ICECHIM:

  • Pilot plant experiments to optimize operating parameters;
  • Demonstration of the efficiency of the technology implemented in the industrial environment by characterizing objectives post-treatment;
  • Contributions to the development of the final technical specification for the integrated technology demonstrated at industrial level;
  • Results and project dissemination.
