Biowaste valorisation is an attractive approach in the framework of the EU Waste Management policies and the development of a circular economy. Wastes from biostreams and different bio-based sources are being under-utilized as potential resource of valuable compounds.

The general objective of the project is to underline, optimize and apply an integrate technology of sustainable and enhanced production of natural extracts with high content of biological active compounds from side streams of agricultural industries applicable for obtaining smart formulations for disorders of the 21st century, for which continuous research is carried out.

General objectives

The general objective of the project is to underline, optimize and apply an integrate technology of sustainable and enhanced production of natural extracts with high content of biological active compounds from side streams of agricultural industries applicable for obtaining smart formulations for disorders of the 21st century, for which continuous research is carried out.

The main idea of the project is to process plants by-products rich in nutritional and bioactive compounds into formulations to be used in pharma industry with the following benefits: the use of obtained extracts and target compounds for the prevention / treatment of age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease; minimizing the amount of plant waste by recovering the target compounds from the by-products; increasing the potential of the pharmaceutical and food market by designing new functional ingredients; increasing the quality of life.

Phase I

Complex study of screening plant waste with potential for use after basic processing. Optimization of an innovative technology for obtaining high-yield polyphenolic compounds from vegetable waste (Part I).

Deployment period: 28/12/2020 – 31/12/2021

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Phytochemical screening of available raw materials from plant waste;
  • Development of quantitative methods for the analysis of compounds from plant waste (evaluation of target compound concentrations by screening samples using modern analytical techniques);
  • Identification of extraction methods to ensure the necessary concentrations in the extracts obtained;
  • Dissemination activities.
Phase II

Optimization of an innovative technology for obtaining high-yield target compounds from vegetable waste as well as natural extracts (Part II).

Deployment period: 01/01/2022 – 31/12/2022

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Finalization of advanced solutions for obtaining extracts from vegetable waste;
  • Characterization of compounds before / after separation and purification;
  • Dissemination activities.
Phase III

Demonstration of the possibility of applying the technology of obtaining phenolic compounds on an industrial scale.

SWOT analysis of value-added products from pilot batches.

Development of technical documentation for the proposed technologies and products.

Deployment period: 01/01/2023 – 26/12/2023

Activities carried out by the partner ICECHIM:

  • Physico-chemical characterization of pilot batch to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed technologies;
  • Contributions to the elaboration of the documentation related to the pilot batch;
  • Contributions to the elaboration of the patent application;
  • Dissemination and communication.
Estimated results

The implementation of the activities of joint Project will provide innovative solutions, helping to prevent health issues, changing the nutrition habits and providing new food products with enriched functionality and biological value.

Estimated results:

1. a prototype of therapeutic powders provided in order to be used by the Hungarian SME;

2. several therapeutic products, made from these powders with impact on health;

3. the Project results will be made public and it will constitute a premise for new ideas, projects and support for reason to deal the public health problems;

4. open new trade routes between Hungary and Romania.
