After 1994, ICECHIM adapted to the new economic conditions due to the structural economic reforms preliminary to the accession to the European Union and to the new research financing systems, gradually orienting itself towards the requirements of small and medium enterprises.

In 2004 the Institute of Chemical Research became the National Research and Development Institute for Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM, providing the company with applied research and theoretical studies in the field of chemistry and petrochemistry. Thus, it claims its position of national leader in the priority fields of activity.

The current purpose of ICECHIM is to assert itself as a national institute in the category of those accredited for outstanding qualities: supporting performance and significantly increasing visibility at European level.

ICECHIM benefits from an extensive network of cooperating researchers and institutions at national and international level, establishing itself as one of the most visible Romanian research institutes.
