G10: Functional dyes and related materials
The research team specialized in synthesis and characterization of chromogenic materials has a solid background in applied color science with a significant expertise in dyes and pigments technology. Besides chromogenic materials based on classical dyes and pigments and their applications, our current concerns are centred on functional dyes, including hybrid structures for stimulated color changing materials, luminophores, and colorants for manipulation of light and energy transfer with suitable properties for emerging technologies (metamaterials, multifunctional structures, holography, organic conductors, light concentrators or E-textiles). Research areas: a) Synthesis of innovative materials based on functional dyes and pigments (stimulated color changing materials, luminescent systems for energy transfer, adaptive systems for light manipulation); b) Hybrid organic-inorganic coloring materials and film-forming materials for rigid and flexible substrates (photocatalytic coatings, anticorrosive film-forming materials, antireflective properties, resistant to overcoating); c) Conditioning of coloring materials as free flowing and easy dispersible powders, dispersion in liquid vehicles or by encapsulation in different matrices; d) Chemical structure investigation, evaluation of optical properties by molecular spectroscopy, color measurements and evaluation of color differences; e) Functionalization of textile materials (pretreatment, dyeing and finishing solutions, modifying of textile fabrics, providing functional effects — sensors, conductive, camouflage, self-cleaning).
JASCO V570 UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer
The spectrophotometer is used to measure: a) Absorbance or transmittance of a sample in the UV-VIS-NIR range; b) Film thickness calculation based on transmission and reflection spectra of thin films ; c) Transmittance of liquid and solid samples; d) Reflectance of solid samples; color analysis (tristimulus values, chromaticity coordinates, lightness, hue, chroma, color differences based on the XYZ Color System – CIE); e) Solar Direct Transmittance/reflectance measurement – calculates the transmittance and reflectance of both solar radiation and visible light ; f) Analyze thin films on planar surfaces.
JASCO FP6500 spectrofluorimeter
Spectrofluorimeter is used for: a) Recording emission and excitation fluorescence spectra on powders, films and liquids; b) Color fluorescence measurement – measures the reflectance (% R) of a fluorescent sample and calculates the tristimulus values, chromaticity coordinates, brightness index and chromaticity index according to the XYZ color specification system established by CIE; b) Calculation of the solid state quantum efficiency in the fluorescence emission spectrum using the standard reflectance spectrum and the emission spectrum of the sample (using an integrating sphere – ISF 513).
JASCO FTIR 6300 spectrometer
The spectrometer can be used for: Measurement in transmission (in KBr pellets, liquids and gases in specific cells); Total attenuated reflectance (ATR-FTIR) – Analysis of liquids, pastes, powders, films and flexible solids; FTIR specular reflectance – Measurement of liquid surfaces, thin films, thin layers of creams, pastes with double transmission on absorption test cards; thickness of plastic films, measurement of films on metal substrates; Diffuse Reflectance (DRIFT) – Analysis of powders, rough surfaces and fibers in mixtures with KBr; dilution-free analysis using an abrasive sampling kit; 80 degree angle reflection for thin film characterization.
M17 – LUZEX 450E
The equipment is especially useful for researches on preparation, stabilization, characterization and application of disperse systems. Qualitative or semi-quantitative information about particle size and shape can be determined, by numerically counting the amount of particles within predetermined size fractions. The microscope has lenses which will enlarge the particles images, enabling to individually determine sizes of particles of minimally 1 µm diameter. The system is equipped with an OPTIKA 3Mpx optical camera, and the images are processed with ProView software.
XENOTEST 150 S+
Color fastness to light is normally assessed using a high intensity filtered xenon arc lamp to simulate natural daylight. A set of blue wool standard fabric strips that fade at known rates must also be used in each test. The degree of fade is based on the spectrophotometric evaluation in the CIELab system on the test sample compared with the equivalent degree of fade on the blue wool samples.

Ultrasonic processor & atomizer
The VCX 750 is a powerful and versatile ultrasonic liquid processor. Using a variety of accessories, the system can process a wide range of sample types and volumes for many different applications. The 750 watt power supply has the capability of operating our largest assortment of horns and accessories. A standard 1/2″ diameter probe (50 – 250mL volumes) with replaceable tip is included with the system. Unlike conventional spray nozzles that rely on high velocity pressure to shear a fluid into small drops, the ultrasonic atomizer uses vibrational energy to generate a low velocity mist. Median droplet size is 50μm.
New biocompatible products shagaol and curcuminoid-like type used as adjuvantes in cancer radiotherapy
The proposal has as a general objective the obtaining of keto-enolic derivatives of natural origin and of synthesis, used as adjuvants in cancer therapy.
