Eastern Europe’s business and technological innovation potential

at the forefront of the “Clusters Meet Regions” debate series

November 24, 2023

The CLUSTERS AS DRIVERS OF REGIONAL INNOVATION ECO-SYSTEMS conference started with the layout of new concepts in the holistic approach of circular economy transition – the paradigm that brings with it challenges and opportunities – which attracted the participation of 150 representatives of clusters, civil society, enterprises, national and regional public authorities, business support organizations, researchers, financial intermediaries, innovation agencies, employers, investors and other parties of economic interest from Romania and other European countries, as well as from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In deep conversations with policymakers, the event explored the systemic changes needed to harness the power of collective action which could enable local green deals.

Europe needs a sustainable industrial policy that promotes a fair transition to a NET-ZERO economy. For this, innovation, investment and training are essential. The National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest, as a representative of the domestic research-development community and a as member of the 3R GREEN Cluster, shared handprint insights related to community-led initiatives in addressing the surging global demand for secondary raw materials.

Addressing industrial sector innovation is one of the 21st century’s major challenges, which is why the organizers – the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, on behalf of the European Commission, in collaboration with the Regional Development Agency North-East Romania and the Romanian Association of Clusters – CLUSTERO, with the support of the Enterprise Europe Network – came together to facilitate this “Clusters Meet Regions” visionary initiative, with the main goal of creating a collaborative environment for the development of innovative products and services for small and medium size businesses.

Senior officials and innovation management and technological transfer project coordinators from various fields of activity (health, bio-economy, and light industry) presented communications that made reference to economic and social developments, frequently related to the impact of the digital revolution, transition energy, and globalization. Anticipating changes in business models for the new millennium, the debates’ conclusions also targeted trends in both the secondary sector of economic activity – such as heavy industry – and the emerging sectors – tertiary and quaternary, more ecological and knowledge-based industries, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach, the articulation of a participatory architecture through new sustainable and digitized technologies, and artificial intelligence to commensurate with the challenges raised by industry 5.0.

INCDCP-ICECHIM Bucharest, member of the Bio-based Industries Consortium, announces the completion of the EXCornsEED project

March 3rd, 2023

The EXCornsEED project represents an up-cycling exercise – a proactive approach to the challenges for prosperity of neighbouring european communities from the perspective of models proposed by the circular economy paradigm, with the aim of developing and validating an integrated protocol, dedicated to green and sustainable technologies for the recovery of proteins and bio-active molecules from the by-products of biorefineries generically used in the production of biofuels, and their use in the formulation of functional products in the fields of food, cosmetics and chemicals.

The concluding meeting of the partners provided not only the chance to discuss the progress made within the consortium, but also to exchange ideas with the entire project team and the researchers involved.

The audience was delighted with the results and gave the consortium a standing ovation. The project was perceived as a significant advance in the field of bioeconomy, with particular emphasis on the development and validation of an integrated process of innovative and highly sustainable extraction/purification/concentration technologies to be applied to bio-refinery side streams, and many participants were excited to see new bio-refineries in the future.

EXCornsEED has been a resounding success and society will continue to benefit from its legacy for years to come.

Romanian Research Elite Awards

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. – Pietro Aretino

The Gala of Romanian Researchers, whose first edition took place on January 31, 2023, brings to the fore the status of the man of genius among his peers and, especially, Romanian researchers across diaspora – back home.

NIRDCP-ICECHIM supported the initiative and the media campaign online and in-situ, on the occasion of the long-awaited event that offered moments of rare clarity, concentration and all-encompassing vision on the significant impact of the Romanian elite in the humanities and fundamental sciences, at the precipise of settlehood, and abundantly highlighted the more-often-than-not surprising modesty of important Romanian scholars, which stems from the fact that, generically, they are consider themselves to belong to the world and regard themselves as commonplace individuals.

The INCDCP-ICECHIM community congratulates both finalists and awardees, as well as the Gala organizers and partners!

Global Women’s Breakfast Romania 2023

January 26th, 2023

The National Institute for Research & Development for Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest is hosting the second IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast Meeting in Romania on February 14, 2022, starting 10:15 a.m. (EET) via Zoom and invites all interested parties to join the awareness campaign in view of supporting and engendering equity in the wider research ecosystem.

Global Women’s Breakfast Romania aims to be a “smart-casual” event that facilitates the formation of communities on a local, regional and international scale to share effectively and strategically for progress and organizational development.

The annual #GWB Romania meetings with representatives of the local research, conservation and education community are the social glue to awareness-raising initiatives regarding the rights and freedoms of the members of the scientific community, and to leadership solutions that make research a more inclusive, representative and more accessible profession, both at the individual and institutional level – including how to be a reliable ally for those closest to you who find themselves in this endeavor. Last but not least, we’ll talk about the power of collaboration and how valuable it is to bring people from different backgrounds into project teams.

Global Women’s Breakfast Romania aims to bring together researchers, women and men, from all types of research centers and from all levels of professional development, as well as practitioners active in all fields of science, to debate transdisciplinary issues and to socialize during a virtual breakfast. The main objective is to facilitate the development of an assertive community dedicated to overcoming barriers to accessing professional development opportunities in the STEM fields.

INCDCP-ICECHIM, as the organizer, recommends the public dissemination of the event coordinates – participation is free.
