Eastern Europe’s business and technological innovation potential

at the forefront of the “Clusters Meet Regions” debate series

November 24th, 2023

The CLUSTERS AS DRIVERS OF REGIONAL INNOVATION ECO-SYSTEMS conference started with the layout of new concepts in the holistic approach of circular economy transition – the paradigm that brings with it challenges and opportunities – which attracted the participation of 150 representatives of clusters, civil society, enterprises, national and regional public authorities, business support organizations, researchers, financial intermediaries, innovation agencies, employers, investors and other parties of economic interest from Romania and other European countries, as well as from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In deep conversations with policymakers, the event explored the systemic changes needed to harness the power of collective action which could enable local green deals.

Europe needs a sustainable industrial policy that promotes a fair transition to a NET-ZERO economy. For this, innovation, investment and training are essential. The National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest, as a representative of the domestic research-development community and a as member of the 3R GREEN Cluster, shared handprint insights related to community-led initiatives in addressing the surging global demand for secondary raw materials.

Addressing industrial sector innovation is one of the 21st century’s major challenges, which is why the organizers – the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, on behalf of the European Commission, in collaboration with the Regional Development Agency North-East Romania and the Romanian Association of Clusters – CLUSTERO, with the support of the Enterprise Europe Network – came together to facilitate this “Clusters Meet Regions” visionary initiative, with the main goal of creating a collaborative environment for the development of innovative products and services for small and medium size businesses.

Senior officials and innovation management and technological transfer project coordinators from various fields of activity (health, bio-economy, and light industry) presented communications that made reference to economic and social developments, frequently related to the impact of the digital revolution, transition energy, and globalization. Anticipating changes in business models for the new millennium, the debates’ conclusions also targeted trends in both the secondary sector of economic activity – such as heavy industry – and the emerging sectors – tertiary and quaternary, more ecological and knowledge-based industries, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach, the articulation of a participatory architecture through new sustainable and digitized technologies, and artificial intelligence to commensurate with the challenges raised by industry 5.0.

Within the framework of project POC-A1-A1.2.3-G-2015-P_40_352, Knowledge transfer, Sequential procedures for closing lateral flows from the bioeconomy and innovative (bio)products results from theseSECVENT [My_SMIS 105684], the National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest organizes the project’s balance workshop on October 11, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The silver lining of this project is, first of all, a reflection of our efforts and dedication in promoting the exchange of knowledge and innovation. We have been able to highlight that there is potential value in aggregating knowledge and experiences from various sectors and fields, especially in the cross-sectoral field of the Bioeconomy.

Our presentations and discussions will focus on some defining examples of innovative ecosystems, including:

  1. Sustainable recovery of phosphorus from bioresources: We explored ways to harness phosphorus from biological resources, thereby helping to reduce dependence on finite resources and promote a more sustainable circular economy.
  2. Carbon-negative value chains: We have identified and developed strategies to create value chains that eliminate or reduce carbon emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.
  3. Regenerative agriculture: We studied agricultural methods and practices that encourage soil regeneration and support biodiversity, thus promoting greener and more sustainable agriculture.
  4. Small-scale biorefineries for organic farms: We analyzed the technologies and processes that allow the transformation of biological raw materials into valuable products, contributing to the creation of alternative sources of energy and biodegradable materials.

These drivers facilitating the placement of the citizen at the epicenter of the innovation process within the Living Labs were illustrated by the results obtained within our project, namely “POC-A1-A1.2.3-G-2015-P_40_352 SEVENT, My_SMIS 105684 .” We have demonstrated that partnership and knowledge sharing between researchers, industry and the community can have a significant impact on the sustainable development of the Bioeconomy.”

This final stakeholders’ meeting of this project does not mark the end, but the beginning of a new stage in our evolution. This experience has inspired us to continue to explore and develop new research and innovation projects that capitalize on the symbiotic exchange of knowledge and contribute to the structuring of Living Labs-type ecosystems.

We enthusiastically invite all interested parties to join our discussions and contribute to future research and innovation projects. Together, we can continue to build a more sustainable and innovative future in the Bioeconomy. The official press release is accessible below.

Romanian Research Elite Awards

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. – Pietro Aretino

The Gala of Romanian Researchers, whose first edition took place on January 31, 2023, brings to the fore the status of the man of genius among his peers and, especially, Romanian researchers across diaspora – back home.

NIRDCP-ICECHIM supported the initiative and the media campaign online and in-situ, on the occasion of the long-awaited event that offered moments of rare clarity, concentration and all-encompassing vision on the significant impact of the Romanian elite in the humanities and fundamental sciences, at the precipise of settlehood, and abundantly highlighted the more-often-than-not surprising modesty of important Romanian scholars, which stems from the fact that, generically, they are consider themselves to belong to the world and regard themselves as commonplace individuals.

The INCDCP-ICECHIM community congratulates both finalists and awardees, as well as the Gala organizers and partners!

Knowledge sharing workshop to facilitate the formation of value chains in the local economy

June 17th, 2022

The National Research and Development Institute for Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM organizes, within the project POC-A1-A1.2.3-G-2015-P_40_352, Knowledge transfer, Sequential procedures for closing side flows from the bioeconomy and innovative (bio)products results from these – SEVENT, My_SMIS 105684, type C subsidiary project Closing value chains in the bioeconomy through the innovative use of diatomite from Pâtârlagele – DiaCER, on June 22, 2022, 11.00 a.m., a workshop aimed at using knowledge to accelerate the formation of chains of value in the economy.

By the end of the XXth century, Romania was the largest producer of diatomite in Europe. The purpose of this workshop is to support the relaunch of diatomite exploitation in Romania, by solving a weak point highlighted in the Mining Strategy of Romania 2017 – 2035 – the lack of post-extraction industries for non-metallic ores. The solution that this workshop proposes is the formation of an innovative ecosystem in which the knowledge of research organizations is used to add high value to a mineral resource, throughout the economic chain.

The use of diatomite-based products exhausted in an industrial process as a raw material for another industrial process, as well as the use of diatomite together with renewable resources or for the intensification of the production of renewable resources, represent the main coagulation axes for two-way oriented knowledge transfer fields included in the National Strategy for Research, Innovation and SMART Specialization 2021-2027, Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment and respectively Climate, energy and mobility.

Economic agents with complementary concerns in the use of (bio)products based on diatomite will participate in this workshop, as well as suppliers of equipment and services necessary to market these (bio)products resulting from the innovative use of diatomite. The role of this workshop is also to form new partnerships for knowledge transfer, as well as to strengthen the existing ones.

Venue: Institutul Național de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Chimie și Petrochimie – ICECHIM, Spl. Independenței nr. 202, sector 6, București – Conference Hall, 3rd floor.
