Eastern Europe’s business and technological innovation potential

at the forefront of the “Clusters Meet Regions” debate series

November 24th, 2023

The CLUSTERS AS DRIVERS OF REGIONAL INNOVATION ECO-SYSTEMS conference started with the layout of new concepts in the holistic approach of circular economy transition – the paradigm that brings with it challenges and opportunities – which attracted the participation of 150 representatives of clusters, civil society, enterprises, national and regional public authorities, business support organizations, researchers, financial intermediaries, innovation agencies, employers, investors and other parties of economic interest from Romania and other European countries, as well as from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In deep conversations with policymakers, the event explored the systemic changes needed to harness the power of collective action which could enable local green deals.

Europe needs a sustainable industrial policy that promotes a fair transition to a NET-ZERO economy. For this, innovation, investment and training are essential. The National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest, as a representative of the domestic research-development community and a as member of the 3R GREEN Cluster, shared handprint insights related to community-led initiatives in addressing the surging global demand for secondary raw materials.

Addressing industrial sector innovation is one of the 21st century’s major challenges, which is why the organizers – the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, on behalf of the European Commission, in collaboration with the Regional Development Agency North-East Romania and the Romanian Association of Clusters – CLUSTERO, with the support of the Enterprise Europe Network – came together to facilitate this “Clusters Meet Regions” visionary initiative, with the main goal of creating a collaborative environment for the development of innovative products and services for small and medium size businesses.

Senior officials and innovation management and technological transfer project coordinators from various fields of activity (health, bio-economy, and light industry) presented communications that made reference to economic and social developments, frequently related to the impact of the digital revolution, transition energy, and globalization. Anticipating changes in business models for the new millennium, the debates’ conclusions also targeted trends in both the secondary sector of economic activity – such as heavy industry – and the emerging sectors – tertiary and quaternary, more ecological and knowledge-based industries, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach, the articulation of a participatory architecture through new sustainable and digitized technologies, and artificial intelligence to commensurate with the challenges raised by industry 5.0.

SECVENT Knowledge Transfer Project Report: Opportunities for the

Future of Innovation in the Bioeconomy

Octomber 10th, 2023

Within the framework of project POC-A1-A1.2.3-G-2015-P_40_352, Knowledge transfer, Sequential procedures for closing lateral flows from the bioeconomy and innovative (bio)products results from theseSECVENT [My_SMIS 105684], the National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest organizes the project’s balance workshop on October 11, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The silver lining of this project is, first of all, a reflection of our efforts and dedication in promoting the exchange of knowledge and innovation. We have been able to highlight that there is potential value in aggregating knowledge and experiences from various sectors and fields, especially in the cross-sectoral field of the Bioeconomy.

Our presentations and discussions will focus on some defining examples of innovative ecosystems, including:

  1. Sustainable recovery of phosphorus from bioresources: We explored ways to harness phosphorus from biological resources, thereby helping to reduce dependence on finite resources and promote a more sustainable circular economy.
  2. Carbon-negative value chains: We have identified and developed strategies to create value chains that eliminate or reduce carbon emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.
  3. Regenerative agriculture: We studied agricultural methods and practices that encourage soil regeneration and support biodiversity, thus promoting greener and more sustainable agriculture.
  4. Small-scale biorefineries for organic farms: We analyzed the technologies and processes that allow the transformation of biological raw materials into valuable products, contributing to the creation of alternative sources of energy and biodegradable materials.

These drivers facilitating the placement of the citizen at the epicenter of the innovation process within the Living Labs were illustrated by the results obtained within our project, namely “POC-A1-A1.2.3-G-2015-P_40_352 SEVENT, My_SMIS 105684 .” We have demonstrated that partnership and knowledge sharing between researchers, industry and the community can have a significant impact on the sustainable development of the Bioeconomy.”

This final stakeholders’ meeting of this project does not mark the end, but the beginning of a new stage in our evolution. This experience has inspired us to continue to explore and develop new research and innovation projects that capitalize on the symbiotic exchange of knowledge and contribute to the structuring of Living Labs-type ecosystems.

We enthusiastically invite all interested parties to join our discussions and contribute to future research and innovation projects. Together, we can continue to build a more sustainable and innovative future in the Bioeconomy. The official press release is accessible below.
