G7: Emerging nanotechnologies
Per aspera ad astra Generally speaking, the expression Emerging technologies covers new and potentially powerful technologies that can be considered critical to humanity’s future (for example, genetic manipulation, artificial intelligence, alternate energy and nanotechnology). Thus, even though nanotechnology is itself an emerging technology, when speaking of “Emerging nanotechnologies” we are focusing at new applications, such as environmental protection, cultural heritage protection or development of new construction materials, areas in which the members of the research team possesses recognized expertise, as proven by the published scientific papers, patents and research projects implemented. The research areas covered by the Emerging nanotechnologies group (documented by more than 130 publications in ISI journals, patents and research projects) can be summarized as follows: a. Synthesis, characterization and applications of new nanomaterials for environmental protection; b. Development of new nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties; c. Obtaining of construction materials (based on nanomaterials) with special properties; d. Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for applications related to cultural heritage protection; archaeometry studies. The Emerging Nanotechnologies Group aims to: – Promote the innovation regarding the use of nanomaterials in new, cutting-edge applications; – Implement research collaborations at local level (INCDCP-ICECHIM) and with national and international partners, in the areas for which the group possesses proven expertise; – Develop independent research projects, as presented in the Research projects chapter. The main direction change at group level is represented by the shift from chemical methods for obtaining metallic nanoparticles to “green chemistry” methods, respectively, the phytosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Synthesis, characterization and applications of (natural) surfactants represents the new research area explored by our group. In the same time, our group explores the use of colloidal systems in applications related to the increase of the quality of life (such as industrial applications – detergents-cosmetics, metal processing, textiles, medicine, agriculture and environmental applications).
